Sex workers in England and Wales experience a disproportionately high rate of violence compared to other groups. This is due to the criminalization of sex work, which has created an environment where these individuals are vulnerable to attack (Cusick & MacKenzie, 2019). Furthermore, there is also a lack of legal protection for sex workers which only exacerbates the problem (Oram & Stöver, 2017).

The current approach to policing sex work in England and Wales is often focused on apprehending those involved rather than protecting them from harm. This creates an atmosphere where law enforcement officers are seen as adversaries rather than allies by many sex workers – leading them to mistrust police or not report incidents when they occur (Baker et al., 2018). In order for violence against these individuals to be reduced there must first be a shift in how authorities view their role within this space: from punishing offenders per se but moreso creating an environment that emphasizes safety and respect towards sex workers.

In addition, policy makers should focus on decriminalizing both solicitation and brothels so that those engaging in these activities can do so without fear of being arrested or harassed by law enforcement officials (Oram & Stöver, 2017). Additionally, providing funding for organizations focused on helping vulnerable populations such as outreach services or health clinics would further help make sure that those at risk have access to resources they need while simultaneously reducing incidences of violence against them (McCarthy-Jones et al., 2016).
