down and sad, having low self-esteem, wanting to stay home often, irritability, lack of energy, and no longer have the motivation and pleasure of things an
individual used to enjoy.

Depression is a disorder that causes constant feelings of sadness and hopelessness and changes in mood and behavior that can affect different aspects of one’s life, such as their relationships, work, or hobbies. The key features and symptoms associated with depression include feeling down and sad, having low self-esteem, wanting to stay home often, irritability, lack of energy, loss of motivation for activities an individual used to enjoy (Mayo Clinic Depression (major depressive disorder), 2022).
The endocrine system plays an important role in depression. Research suggests that abnormal hormone levels can increase the risk of developing depression due to its influence on neurotransmitters like serotonin which are involved in regulating mood (Manji & Drevets 2012). It appears that hormones may be regulated by either positive or negative feedback loops which could also lead to elevated or decreased levels depending on certain conditions. One example is cortisol which has been linked to depressive disorders when it is chronically released at higher than normal rates due to repeated stressors over time (Geracioti et al., 2019).
Depression primarily affects the brain but can also have adverse effects on other organs within the body such as the heart or immune system via physiological processes initiated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) .These effects manifest themselves through changes in appetite or sleeping patterns leading individuals who suffer from this disorder develop chronic physical health issues if left untreated.
