Determine how care coordination can reduce costs. Compile your cost savings data in a spreadsheet, using Microsoft Excel or a suitable application of your choice. (If you elect to use an application other than Excel, check with faculty to avoid potential file compatibility issues.) Your spreadsheet should contain at least four cost-saving elements. Identify the cost-saving element, current costs, and anticipated savings.
The advantages of coordinating care across physicians, specializations, and settings have been a major focus of health-care payment and delivery system reforms. It has been proposed that better care coordination is a solution for a fragmented health system, and that it can lead to better health outcomes, better patient experiences, and reduced costs. However, research on the impact of care coordination programs has shown inconsistent results, and it is far from obvious that the programs’ promise has been or will be realized—particularly in terms of decreasing overall medical expenses. Berkowitz and colleagues have published a new study that adds to the discussion, answering some questions while raising others.
