Poverty often causes people to put relatively more pressure on the environment which results in large families, improper human waste disposal leading to unhealthy living conditions, more pressure on fragile land to meet their needs, over-exploitation of natural resources and more deforestation. Environmental problems add more to the miseries of poor people. Environmental problems cause more suffering among them as environmental damage increases the impact of floods and other environmental catastrophes. There is hope that if we can create smarter, more sustainable cities, we can act on climate change and reduce poverty at the same time. For example, cities are generally associated with a higher standard of living such as, providing people with food, education and housing. Increased education in particular will help to provide generations of city-dwellers around the world with the knowledge and tools to create low-carbon lives.
