As a person of color, I have found that my identity has had a profound impact on my life experiences. Growing up in a predominantly white-majority society exposed me to various forms of discrimination and prejudice which left me feeling alienated and misunderstood for much of my childhood. Even today, there are many things I must confront on a daily basis such as microaggressions from strangers or people making assumptions about what I can or cannot do based solely upon my ethnicity (Sue , 2010).

Although these incidents are difficult to deal with at times, it has also taught me how to be resilient in the face of adversity. Over time this has allowed me to better understand myself and accept who I am despite what the world may think; something which has been incredibly empowering. Additionally, it’s helped give me courage when facing challenging situations while also providing motivation for pursuing meaningful causes such as social justice and equity within our communities (Kysely et al., 2018). Ultimately embracing my identity – whatever its flaws may be – has allowed me greater insight into both myself and those around me thereby allowing us all lead more fulfilling lives.
