Immigrant settlement

This week we examine the distinctly spatial patterns of immigrant settlement, focusing on push/ pull factors, other reasons for immigration, and the communities where immigrants end up making a home. You will look at some data from a migration policy think tank, and do a bit of internet research to understand why certain groups of immigrants reside where they do.

Also, please watch the demonstration video if you find these instructions to be unclear.
Using data from the Migration Policy Institute, pick two countries of origin that interest you. Locate where the majority of immigrants coming from those countries tend to settle in the United States.

Scroll to heading: “Immigrants’ Countries and Regions of Birth”
• Under the fourth bullet point labeled: “Map: Population Distribution for Countries and Regions of Birth, 2015-2019 (pooled)”, click on the link labeled “By State and Top Counties” 0 This link will lead to a map of the United States, with a drop-down menu. The drop-down menu lists of all the countries in the world.
• Select from the list two countries of origin whose immigrant population you are interested in learning more about. O Note how many immigrants from that country are in the US O Note the top 3 counties where the reside. Be specific, include both county and state (Orange County, California; Broward County, Florida) O Is there a location that stands out to you that has a high concentration of immigrants from this country of origin, one that maybe doesn’t fit a common narrative? For example, it’s obvious why migrants from Mexico and Central American countries settle in Texas, California, other border and coastal states. But is there another location that seems to be outside of the conventional pattern of settlement?
After making your lists, do a bit of internet research to uncover why these groups settle in these two areas.
Do some googling by using the following search terms:
immigration, can contain racial bias, unsupported claims, and racial stereotypes. Stick with news-based sources, community newspapers. Be selective and mindful about the content from the sources you draw upon for this assignment.
Write 2 well developed paragraphs on your two groups. Cite sources in-text in parenthesis. (Author, year, p.#)
• Why exactly did these groups interest you? Why did you select them? • What did you learn about settlement patterns of foreign born/first generation immigrants, and our lecture on spatial assimilation and push/ pull factors? • How does what you learned about this group relate to the readings and concepts for the past two weeks? (push/ pull factors, other explanations for immigration to the US; assimilation theories from week 2, etc. • Cite your sources at the end of the paper in a works cited page (APA, MLA, or Chicago are fine).

Overall, Mexico has been the largest single source of migrants (12.9 million), followed closely by India (11.8 million) and Russia (11.3) million (Pew Research Center).

Interest in turning into a medical caretaker has disappeared as of late, presumably because of the historical bac
