Innovations for sustainability are flourishing.

How innovative are they and what solutions do they really bring? Let’s us use the discussion forum to share fascinating innovations for sustainability and discuss their (potential) impacts both positive and negative.

Find an innovation for sustainability that piqued your curiosity. The innovation has to have a clear sustainability objective and claim to bring solution(s) to one or more of the sustainability challenges (or SDGs) we are facing.

In the post, briefly describe the innovation and what is innovative about it (and what type of innovation it is); investigate its capacity to provide a solution to sustainability challenges; and finally discuss its (potential) limitations and risks. In other words, you are asked to critically analyze and debate innovations for sustainability by sharing an innovation and helping your colleagues to go further in their analysis of the innovation for sustainability.

Sustainability is on practically every executive’s mind, but just a handful are putting their ideas into action. Sustainability’s Next Frontier, a recent MIT SMR/BCG annual report, includes this as one of its important findings. This situation hasn’t altered much over the years, with the exception that many businesses were unfamiliar with the concept of sustainability 20 years ago. Most had set up safety, health, and environment departments (SHE) to deal with mounting pressures to protect the environment and their workers’ health (at least while on the job). With the publishing of the UNCED report (Brundtland report) in 1987, the context shifted, defining sustainable development and putting it in the public light.
