Recruitment, selection, and retention are integrally related not only to each other but also to other human resources management (HRM) functions. A successful recruitment effort generates sufficient applicants so that the employer can be selective in the process of identifying the most suitable applicant. The stringency of criteria used for selecting job applicants depends, to a large degree, on the success of the recruitment effort. Retention, in turn, is at least partially related to the selection process. The likelihood of retaining an employee is generally higher when the employee, the job, and the organization are well matched.
