In recent years, Hispanics have become the face of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. During the 1970s, the Irish, Italian and Polish immigrants constituted the vast majority of the Catholic faithful (Reuters FACTBOX, 2008). The denomination, like 59 others besides it, is losing members to other churches, particularly the evangelicals. In a 2012 article by Kathy Sheridan of the Irish times, a growing trend of disregard for ecclesiastical condemnation has become characteristically Irish Catholic. According to Sheridan (2012), a number of attributions can be made for this discombobulating state of affairs. First, people no longer regard the Catholic Church as a “sacred canopy” for moral and spiritual renewal. In this regard, recent issues such as Mary O’Rourke’s scathing condemnation of the Church in the wake of the 2009 Murphy report, or the fall of Cardinal Sean Brady are a case in point.
