I am writing to make the case that Jewish identity is fundamentally about survival. It is no coincidence then that much of what characterizes Jewish identity today is rooted in this mission for survival. From religious observance such as keeping kosher or observing Shabbat to even simply wearing an identifying symbol like a kippah or tallit—these customs all carry with them an essence of protection and longevity. In his book “Jewish Survival – The Identity Problem” author Michael Wyschogrod states that these practices serve both as concrete reminders for Jews themselves “to stay within their own community” while also offering a persistent message “that they will survive whatever may befall them” (Wyschogrod 1983).
This idea can also be seen in modern times as well through various initiatives meant to encourage unity among Jews worldwide such as Birthright Israel which allows young adults from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to connect with their roots by traveling together on an educational journey across Israel (Peleg & amp; Sagi 2017). Within this program lies undertones related more so to security than spirituality – proving once again how much importance Judaism places on ensuring its continuation.
In conclusion, it cannot be denied that developing a strong sense of identity plays an essential role in any cultural group. But given the centuries-long struggle faced by Jews against often insurmountable odds, it should come as no surprise why so much emphasis continues to be placed on preserving Jewish heritage today – namely because doing so equates directly with survival.
