The job description should be specific and include a good amount of detail. Remember, the more we know about our real-world audiences, the better we’ll be able to target them specifically in our application materials. Do not write a generic cover letter. Your letter should be aligned with a job or internship from a job ad.

2) Paste your job ad from indeed.com into a Word Doc and upload it or include a link to where the ad came from.
3) Write the cover letter and upload it to Blackboard. It should be composed with your selected job ad in mind.

Job descriptions should be appropriate for someone with the credentials listed on your resume, except for an undergraduate degree – in other words, you may choose job descriptions that require bachelor’s degrees. Do not choose job descriptions that require PhDs, 10 years of work experience, or other requirements well beyond your current achievements. While ideally you will choose an opportunity you might actually want to apply to, in the end, this is an exercise, and you want to make sure you are adhering to the requirements given to you.
Your cover letter should be at least 3 paragraphs (and no more than 5) and structured in the following way:
1st paragraph: introduce yourself and specifically reference the job ad that you are responding to. Address your cover letter to “Hiring Manager” etc. only if you don’t know the exact name of the person who will ultimately be in charge of hiring. This is also a good time to name drop if you have connections within the company which you are applying to. Also, mention something about the company that you appreciate in a sincere way. Be sure that you have a thesis statement here– something along the lines of “I’m an ideal candidate and I have the experience to back up this claim.” (Though do not write this sentence verbatim)
2nd paragraph, 3rd and 4th paragraph: Sell yourself as an ideal candidate for this position. Describe relevant job experience and skills and provide proof for all of your claims. Specifically state why your experience makes you the perfect candidate for this position. Get as specific as possible. Be sure that your sentences exhibit a logical flow. Begin with your most compelling evidence. Also, write in a manner that actively demonstrates that you understand the ins and outs of the profession you hope to enter. Write using technical terms and use appropriate jargon.
Final paragraph: Conclude with a statement of thanks and mention that you’re looking forward to future correspondence with someone at the company. Restate your main thesis in different terms if you desire.
Remember, research and make educated guesses regarding the company’s culture. Check out their website and see if they have a company blog. This can help you better understand the company and allow you to compose your letter using the appropriate tone.
Be personable and professional. Always write with a “you” approach– meaning, everything you write in the letter should demonstrate what you can do for the company. Never suggest that the company should do something for you. Show that you are a great fit as well as tell it.
Also, remember: proofreading is key. An initial reader of your materials will find any way they can to dismiss you, do don’t let them.
