The primary languages and dialects of my country, India, are Hindi and English. According to the Indian Constitution, Hindi is the official language while English is an additional official language (Ministry Of Law & Justice, 2020). Hindi is spoken by a majority of the population with 41% speaking it as their first language and another 24% having it as their second language (Census Of India 2011). In terms of dialects – there are several varieties that belong to different linguistic families such as Dravidian or Indo-Aryan which are each spoken in certain regions across the nation
In addition though– there also exists many other minority languages such as Sanskrit which was originally used for religious texts but has since been revived some areas like Maharashtra (Sinha, 2019). Additionally– there are tribal languages spoken by indigenous communities throughout India along with Austroasiatic tongues like Mundari found within Jharkhand state. Moreover – due influence from colonialism– Portuguese even still remains somewhat popular Goa today (Sinha, 2019)
Unfortunately though , some of these languages have become endangered over time due lack speakers or governmental support. This includes Munda for example which doesn’t have any native speakers left and can only be heard in recordings meaning that it’s on verge extinction unless outside help comes into play(Brahui et al., 2018). Furthermore – many regional dialects suffer from similar issues because they often don’t get recognition from central government so resources directed towards preserving them aren’t allocated adequately
Overall then – most Indians speak Hindi while English serves supplemental role within society but there exist numerous minority tongues that range widely in terms popularity. Unfortunately though– these lesser known varieties face potential endangerment due neglect so efforts must be made to ensure they remain alive otherwise they may soon disappear entirely.
