Leadership and Management
Many wonder about the differences between leadership and management. Are they mutually exclusive? Do professionals have both qualities – or do they learn one or the other over a long period of time? These questions are just the tip of the iceberg. One responsibility of a manager is controlling a group in order to accomplish a specific goal. Leadership, on the other hand, is the ability of an individual to motivate, influence, and enable other employees to make a contribution to the success of an organization. Although there are clear differences between management and leadership, the two constructs overlap. When managers are involved in influencing a group to meet its goals, they are involved in leadership. When leaders are involved in planning, organizing, staffing, and controlling, they are involved in management.
