This lesson plan is designed to teach students both the history of sculpture and also how to create their own sculptures. The following two standards from the National Core Arts Standards will be addressed:

1) Understanding and Applying Media, Techniques, and Processes (VA:Cr1.2). This standard requires students to understand how materials, tools, techniques and processes work together in a variety of art forms.

Knowledge Target 1 – Students will identify at least three different types of sculptures (Hirst 2020).
Reasoning Target 1 – Students will analyze specific characteristics that make a sculpture unique compared to other media types (Barringer et al., 2019).
Knowledge Target 2 – Students will name at least two elements found in all sculptures regardless of the material used for its creation (Sculpture Garden 2020).
Reasoning Target 2 -Students will compare and contrast various sculptures from various cultures based on their historical context (Encyclopedia Britannica 2021).
