John Q (2002) – Story centers on a man whose nine-year-old son desperately needs a life-saving transplant. When he discovers that his medical insurance will not cover surgery costs and alternative government aid is unavailable, John Q. John Q. Archibald (Denzel Washington), from the 2002 film John Q., is faced with a life or death situation when his son, Michael, contracts an illness and desperately needs a heart transplant. After learning that his insurance does not cover the medical costs for this procedure and government aid is unavailable to him, John resorts to extreme measures in order to save his son: he takes over the hospital emergency room, holds people hostage and demands that Michael receive surgery (Nelson ,2002). As such, he is prepared to risk both his own life and those of other individuals in order achieve this end.
John’s predicament serves as a powerful commentary on health care inequality within our society; despite being employed full time as a factory worker with good wages, he still cannot afford basic human rights such as access to quality medical care. This struggle has become all too common in today’s world where many families are forced into debt due to exorbitant health bills despite having some form of coverage (Uscinski & Wittkower 2018). Thus it can be argued that John represents those who feel helpless against economic systems that deny them help.
Furthermore, this example also emphasizes the power of parental love and devotion for one’s children. Despite facing immense pressure due to personal circumstances-a sense of responsibility towards those held hostage – John continues fighting for what he believes is right and refuses any offer which does not meet his condition: saving Michael (Nelson ,2002).
