Key to this essay is that you will move beyond simply analyzing the primary texts, i.e. the novels themselves, and begin incorporating secondary texts, which are works that discuss the novels, the authors, the historical/cultural context of the novels, the literary impact and legacy of the novels, or some combination of these. You must cite and discuss a minimum of five secondary sources.
Your goal in this paper should be to put various voices and perspectives in conversation with one another in a manner that proves your own, unique point regarding the novel. Your paper may, if you so choose, build upon the argument you began developing in your synthesis essay. If you prefer, you may take your analysis in an entirely different direction. The only stricture in place is that you must base your analysis on a thesis statement that is presented in clear and certain terms within the first two paragraphs of your paper. You must also make sure that every paragraph that follows somehow works toward proving this thesis statement: it may provide necessary biographical or historical context, it may highlight direct textual evidence, or it may profile/discuss the analysis of other critics. All of the discussions included in your paper must have some direct bearing upon your thesis statement.
