As a social worker, I would use engagement skills to work with this client in order to address the issues related to his alcohol abuse. First, I would practice active listening by attempting to fully understand what he is expressing and why he might be feeling that way (Cummings et al., 2020). This will require me to resist any urge for immediate problem solving or advice giving; rather I should focus on validating and acknowledging the emotions being expressed in order for him feel heard and understood (Cummings et al., 2020).

Next, I can incorporate motivational interviewing into my strategy. This involves establishing a healthy relationship based on mutual respect while also providing guidance towards obtaining desired behavior changes (Miller & Rollnick , 2002).
