Media regulation is the process of controlling, influencing and directing media content through laws, regulations and industry-led codes of conduct. It is important to regulate the media because it can have a significant impact on public opinion, politics and decision making. Media regulation helps to ensure that all citizens have access to accurate information that is not biased or politically motivated (Mizrahy & Adoni, 2020). Additionally, by controlling the type of media content being broadcasted governments can protect vulnerable populations from exposure to harmful material such as hate speech or pornography (Carney et al., 2019).

A comparison of different media regulatory systems in the Arab region provides insight into how countries are tackling this issue. For example, Saudi Arabia has some of the most restrictive regulations in place which include banning any material deemed offensive to Islam (Alaani & Alotaibi, 2018). In contrast Qatar has more relaxed controls as evidenced by their less stringent censorship policies (Borodina et al., 2017). Jordan also has comparatively liberal press freedom laws but with greater restrictions than Qatar due mainly to its close relationship with Israel (Shehadeh & Al-Jazairy , 2019).

Overall, these examples demonstrate that each country approaches regulating their media differently based on local conditions. This suggests that while there is no one size fits all approach when it comes to regulating the media appropriate policies must be tailored for each society’s needs if they are expected to be effective .
