The three most important issues facing corrections today would be overcrowding, recidivism, and prison reform. Overcrowding has become a major issue as the number of inmates in correctional facilities continues to increase while resources remain scarce. This situation has resulted in inadequate living conditions for many prisoners which can create further health and safety concerns if not addressed appropriately. Recidivism is another key issue since offenders often return to prison due to a lack of adequate rehabilitation programs or other forms of support during their initial release period; this increases costs associated with incarceration while also diminishing public confidence in the criminal justice system. Lastly, prison reform is essential for reducing rates of both overcrowding and recidivism through implementing better design standards within prisons as well as providing more comprehensive services such as job training or education that can help improve inmates’ prospects upon re-entering society (Fang & Huang 2019).
