After reading Katrina Schwartz’s article “7 Qualities That Promote Teacher Leadership in Schools,” I have identified the area that I have the least amount of skills, qualities, or motivation to be collaboration. While I recognize the importance of working together with colleagues and other stakeholders within a school setting, it is something that can be challenging for me because of my introverted nature.
I often find myself hesitant to voice my opinions or ask questions publicly due to fear of being judged by others or appearing uninformed about certain topics which can make it difficult for me to engage in meaningful dialogue with those around me (Rice 2020). Furthermore, as an educator who works primarily with individual students rather than entire classrooms, having conversations focused on larger-scale initiatives such as curriculum development or technology integration can be overwhelming and intimidating at times.
In order to become more comfortable with collaboration I plan on implementing several strategies into my daily routine. These include scheduling one-on-one meetings with colleagues whenever needed so that we can discuss specific issues in detail without feeling rushed (Kerr 2017), as well as seeking out opportunities to participate in group projects and co-teaching activities so I am able to learn from experienced teachers while also contributing when possible (Stern et al., 2015). By continually pushing myself outside my comfort zone over time, I hope to eventually become more confident when engaging in collaborative processes with others.
