There are many different methods for enhancing our ability to learn and retain new information. To make sure you are able to use this information in a real-world setting that’s meaningful to you, you will be creating a workplace training activity that can be related to a current or future job.
Successful completion of this activity involves the creation of a multimedia presentation (audio or video required for your voiceover) to demonstrate your ability to create and discuss a workplace training activity that effectively uses learning and memory concepts. Here are some questions to answer within your presentation. But first, please watch the following videos:
Briefly describe the setting of a current or future job.
What is the new information to be learned and retained? This can be related to a new product/process/tool, interpersonal communication, hiring and training, inclusion/diversity awareness, etc.
Who are your learners? Co-workers, subordinates, mentees, students, new employees/recruits, others?
What strategies/concepts do you plan to use to introduce the new information to your learners?
How would you assist learners with the successful encoding of the new information?
What steps would you undertake to help learners commit the new information to their long-term memory?
What would the duration/length of your training activity be? Why is this important?
How would you evaluate the success of your training activity?
Setting: A new employee orientation session
New information to be learned and retained:
Learners: New employees
Multimedia presentation:
The presentation would begin with a brief overview of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The presenter would then discuss some of the benefits of diversity and inclusion, such as increased creativity and innovation, improved problem-solving skills, and a stronger sense of community.
The presenter would then discuss some of the challenges that can arise in a diverse and inclusive workplace, such as unconscious bias and microaggressions. The presenter would provide tips on how to identify and address these challenges.
Finally, the presenter would discuss some of the ways that new employees can contribute to a diverse and inclusive workplace. The presenter would encourage employees to be open-minded and respectful of their colleagues’ differences. The presenter would also encourage employees to speak up if they see or experience discrimination or harassment.
Learning and memory concepts used in the presentation:
The presentation would use a variety of learning and memory concepts to help new employees learn and retain the information. For example, the presenter would use repetition to emphasize key points. The presenter would also use storytelling and examples to make the information more relatable and engaging.
The presenter would also use active learning activities to help new employees retain the information. For example, the presenter might ask new employees to complete a quiz on unconscious bias or to participate in a role-playing exercise on how to handle a microaggression.
Benefits of the presentation:
The presentation would provide new employees with the knowledge and skills they need to create a welcoming and inclusive workplace. The presentation would also help new employees to better understand the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
The presentation would also benefit the organization as a whole. A diverse and inclusive workplace is more likely to be creative, innovative, and successful.
