Natural disaster
Disasters happen when a community is not appropriately resourced or organized to withstand the impact, and whose population is vulnerable because of poverty, exclusion or socially disadvantaged in some way (Mizutori, 2020). A natural disaster is a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the earth. Examples include firestorms, dust storms, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, and other geologic processes. In a disaster, you face the danger of death or physical injury. You may also lose your home, possessions, and community. Such stressors place you at risk for emotional and physical health problems. Institutionalized disaster management programs are the only long-term solutions to reducing the vulnerability of all sectors of society to disasters. The health sector should take lead in promoting the institutionalization of a national disaster management agency and will benefit from decisions taken to reduce vulnerability in other sectors.
