Three things I learned from this article are (1) the changes and updates made in the 5th edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) to better reflect current knowledge about mental health; (2) an understanding of the DSM-5 criteria can help social workers identify appropriate treatments for clients; and (3) having knowledge in one’s ability to use DSM-5 effectively requires social workers to be aware of, discuss, and even challenge diagnostic categories when necessary.
