Non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM) sleep is dreamless sleep. During NREM, the brain waves on the electroencephalographic recording are typically slow and of high voltage, the blood pressure is low, and the sleeper is relatively still. The specific DSM-5 criteria for NREM sleep arousal disorder, sleepwalking type, include: recurrent episodes of incomplete awakening from sleep, usually occurring during the first third of the sleep cycle, accompanied by episodes of rising from bed and walking about; the episodes cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational or other areas of functioning. Scheduled awakening is an evidence-based behavioral treatment that can be effective at decreasing or resolving frequent and severe NREM parasomnias but may be burdensome for parents to implement. Careful documentation of the timing and frequency of parasomnia is essential for successfully utilizing scheduled awakenings. Minimizing triggering factors should also be a focus of treatment.
