Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), known informally as the Agency and the Company, principal foreign intelligence and counterintelligence agency of the U.S. government. Formally created in 1947, the CIA grew out of the World War II Office of Strategic Services (OSS). When the CIA was created, its purpose was to create a clearinghouse for foreign policy intelligence and analysis.
