The school-to-prison pipeline is a phenomenon that has been gaining increasing attention in recent years due to the alarming number of youth, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, getting caught up in the criminal legal system. This trend can be traced back to punitive “zero tolerance” policies implemented by schools which disproportionately target minority students and thus negatively impacting their academic success as well as their future prospects (Losen & Gillespie, 2018). As a result, these policies have led to an increase in suspensions and expulsions – pushing more youth into contact with law enforcement and ultimately causing them to get entangled in the justice system (Monahan et al., 2019).
