The life and achievements of Pericles, a prominent statesman of fifth-century Athens, have had an immense impact on the development of Western civilization. He was one of the most influential political figures in Athenian history and his legacy continues to be celebrated today for its importance in shaping democratic ideals for centuries. Throughout his time as leader – which lasted from 460 to 429 BC – he managed to develop a strong sense of national identity in Athens by enacting many reforms that strengthened democracy & stabilized economy through carefully planned public works projects such as constructing walls around city limits (Lazebnik). This allowed greater stability during turbulent times while also providing further opportunities citizens within community alike.
