Theme: Symbolism in Poetry
Symbolism is a literary device in which an object, person, or event takes on a meaning beyond its literal sense. Poets often use symbols to express complex emotions, ideas, and themes in a way that is both evocative and memorable.

Description and Reason for Choice:
Symbolism is a powerful tool that poets can use to create layers of meaning and emotion in their work. The three poems I have chosen, “The Raven,” “The Road Not Taken,” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” all use symbolism to great effect. In “The Raven,” the titular raven is a symbol of loss, death, and despair. In “The Road Not Taken,” the two roads in the forest represent the choices we make in life. And in “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” the woods are a symbol of peace, solitude, and nature.
Showcase of Symbolism Use:
In “The Raven,” Poe uses the raven to represent the speaker’s grief and obsession with his lost love. The raven’s constant repetition of the word “nevermore” drives the speaker further into despair.
In “The Road Not Taken,” Frost uses the two roads in the forest to represent the choices we make in life. The speaker takes the road less traveled, which suggests that he is willing to take risks and forge his own path.
In “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” Frost uses the woods to represent peace, solitude, and nature. The speaker is drawn to the woods because they offer him a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
