Police response to mental health calls has been a source of debate in recent years. On the one hand, there are those who argue that law enforcement should be allowed to respond to and address such crises just like any other emergency situation. On the other hand, others argue that officers are not properly trained or equipped to handle these types of cases and often cause more harm than good when they intervene.

In my opinion, police should only be called as a last resort in cases involving mental health crises due to the potential for mishandling or abuse by officers with limited knowledge about psychiatric illness. It is important for people suffering from mental illness to have access to resources that can provide them with proper care and understanding; this may include counselors, psychiatrists, social workers or even family members who can help de-escalate a situation without resorting to violence or arrests (American Psychological Association [APA], 2020).

However, I also recognize that in some instances it may be necessary for law enforcement personnel to become involved if an individual poses an imminent threat of harm either toward themselves or those around them (APA 2020). In these situations, it is important that officers are adequately prepared with procedures and techniques designed specifically for responding appropriately and safely — such as Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training — so they can better assist those in need without causing any unnecessary distress.

All things considered, police involvement should not replace appropriate medical treatment as the solution for handling someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Rather, law enforcement must work together with qualified healthcare providers so individuals impacted receive adequate support while protecting their safety and civil rights at all times. This requires collaboration between governmental agencies and institutions such as hospitals since both parties play key roles in helping those affected get the care they need.

In summary, I believe police response should only be used when absolutely necessary during encounters involving individuals having a mental health episode — especially if there is an immediate risk posed by said person. Officers must be properly trained on how best approach someone exhibiting signs of psychiatric distress while also recognizing their civil liberties; this way we can ensure all parties remain safe while simultaneously providing guidance towards getting those affected the assistance they require.
