State and explain the four powers (tools) of exclusion according to Hall et al (2011)?
The second tool is social exclusion which pertains to denying people access to certain activities or spaces due to their perceived inferior standing within society based on an individual’s race, gender or other identity markers; for example, women being excluded from participation in traditionally male-dominated roles such as business leadership.(Hall et al 2011).
The third power is economic exclusion which refers to the withholding of resources necessary for economic growth and development. This could include making it difficult for members of disadvantaged communities to acquire capital needed for starting businesses, limiting access to jobs because they do not possess the right qualifications etc.(Hall et al 2011).
Lastly, symbolic exclusion includes language and communication methods that signal ostracism through various forms of stigmatization; this often takes place when derogatory terms are used against a particular group implying they do not belong in mainstream society (Hall et al 2011). It is important to note that all these forms of exclusion work together in order create systems where certain identities are consistently disenfranchised while others enjoy privilege regardless if intended or not.
