Firms should be able to lower expected average cost by massing reserves, such as repairmen, inventories, checkout clerks and diagnostic equipment. Economists are especially concerned about the potential cost advantage to large-sized operations. The term, scale economies refer to any advantage that a larger-scale operation may have over smaller ones. This advantage may come from a higher level of output per unit of input or a lower production cost per unit of output. There are scale economies inherent to queuing processes. An economy would result in the improvement of a performance characteristic of the service system, such as a reduction in the wait in the queue or in the overall time in the system.
