Since the United States incorporation of Mexican territories through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, Mexicans have been subjected to a process known as racialization – a system whereby one’s identity is determined based on their physical characteristics and cultural practices rather than by innate racial qualities (Menchaca 2001). This has led to discrimination and segregation with regards to access to education, jobs, housing and other resources primarily affecting those living in California, Arizona and Texas.

In these states Mexicans were often viewed as lazy or incapable due to their race which resulted in discriminatory treatment from employers who refused them higher salaries or promotions regardless of merit (Menchaca 2001). Additionally they faced restrictions such as prohibitions against owning land or testifying in court which caused further marginalization (Gonzalez 2014). Consequently, many fled into rural areas where they had more freedom but found themselves subjected to new forms of prejudice including stereotypes painting them as ignorant savages unable to properly integrate into ‘civilized society’ (Griswold del Castillo 1984). Thus even within a seemingly open environment there remained obstacles for Mexicans hoping for equality.

The process of racialization also extended beyond just economic hardship. For example the educational system was structured around Anglo-Protestant values meaning those teaching Spanish were considered unsuitable while Mexican students were expected conform despite having different cultural backgrounds (Flores 2005). Furthermore, separate schools were established specifically for Mexican children limiting their access quality education available elsewhere. As a result, when it came time enter college many lacked necessary qualifications while others faced rejection due solely their race alone thus preventing them from advancing professionally even if they had overcome other challenges.

Overall, this period marked an important turning point in history illustrating how racism can manifest itself in various forms without ever actually being explicitly stated. It is only through recognizing these injustices that we can begin steps towards resolving them eventually creating an equitable landscape for all races regardless of background.
