Robots have long been an integral part of our culture and society, from fictional works such as the Terminator to real robots used in manufacturing or space exploration. In this essay I will analyse C-3PO, a humanoid robot from the Star Wars series of films, using theoretical resources from the module. Specifically, I will focus on how this robot’s design relates to socio-cultural politics and how its relationship with humans reflects broader cultural attitudes towards technology.

C-3PO’s design is highly symbolic; his golden colouring serves to reflect wealth and status due to its traditional association with regality (Nussbaum & Henderson 2015). He is also designed in a human form which could represent a way for viewers to relate more easily as well as highlighting “the distinctions between humanity and machine” (McKay 2004: 17). C-3PO often appears alongside another droid R2D2 who has a much simpler mechanical shape; this implies that C-3PO is seen to be superior due to his ‘humanity like’ qualities. On the one hand, it can be argued that C-3PO’s symbolism serves as an example of technological progress – “his evolution … shows us what might be possible if we take robotics seriously” (Anon 2017a). Alternatively, Wajcman suggests that it also reflects fears surrounding technology where robots are presented as Other or alien beings (Wajcman 2010: 161), mirroring existing anxieties about potential threats posed by artificial intelligence.

In terms of his relationship with humans, although initially depicted as clumsy and subservient he eventually becomes more independent by joining forces with Luke Skywalker who views him not just as a tool but rather someone capable of loyalty and friendship. This suggests that advances in robotic technology may allow for meaningful relationships between humans and machines – something which many people find difficult to accept (Berger et al., 2020: 394). However, despite these positive portrayals there are still underlying themes of power – even after becoming friends Luke identifies himself implicitly with authority figures such as Obi Wan Kenobi through calling 3CPO ‘Sir’ (Anon 2017b) suggesting that their relationship remains hierarchical.

Overall then, while C-3PO has evolved over time allowing us insight into what future robotic technology might bring it is important not overlook existing anxieties surrounding them which can influence our perceptions towards them. His portrayal highlights both hopes that robots may cease being tools but also warnings associated with advances in AI potentially leading them taking control away from humans.

regards to the osmosis of pieces into lumps. Mill operator recognizes pieces and lumps of data, the differentiation being that a piece is comprised of various pieces of data. It is fascinating to take note of that while there is a limited ability to recall lumps of data, how much pieces in every one of those lumps can change broadly (Miller, 1956). Anyway it’s anything but a straightforward instance of having the memorable option huge pieces right away, somewhat that as each piece turns out to be more natural, it very well may be acclimatized into a lump, which is then recollected itself. Recoding is the interaction by which individual pieces are ‘recoded’ and allocated to lumps. Consequently the ends that can be drawn from Miller’s unique work is that, while there is an acknowledged breaking point to the quantity of pieces of data that can be put away in prompt (present moment) memory, how much data inside every one of those lumps can be very high, without unfavorably influencing the review of similar number
