Realities of structural racism and sexism in American culture
As increased attention is given to the realities of structural racism and sexism in American culture, organizations are increasingly focused on diversifying talent, creating a mission of anti-racism and equity, and hiring a workforce that is trained to think about the value of diversity, inclusivity, and equity at work. In “Do your Employees Know Why You Believe in Racial Equity,” Ruchika Tulshyan asserts that “done right, creating diverse, equitable, inclusive organizations yield greater profitability, innovation, and smarter teams.” In other words, a commitment to inclusion and equity is critical to organizational success.
This post asks you to reflect on the value of diversity, inclusivity and equity at work and the ways in which you can be a more effective ally. Finally, you will consider resources on anti-descrimination policies so that you are better equipped to advocate for yourself and your colleagues in the workplace.

Around this time each year, Black Women’s Equal Pay Day is observed to commemorate the estimated eight more months that a Black woman working full-time, year-round in the United States needs put in to equal the earnings of her white male equivalent over the previous year. This year, Black women will have to put in a significant amount of more time in the office in August just to catch up to what white males made last year. This translates into the fact that Black women face a daily pay difference, and that gap widens over time. For instance, in 2017, White men earned $1 and Black women earned 61 cents.
