I identify as a Mexican American and my cultural background is shaped by the collective experiences of my family, community, and myself. Being of Mexican heritage, I am part of a culture that values family, hard work, education, and respect for one’s elders. My own individual identity has been developed through an understanding of the shared history and traditions between Mexico and the US.

My US Representative is also Latino/Hispanic — he identifies as Salvadoran American with roots in El Salvador. His cultural background is informed by his upbringing in northern Virginia which was heavily influenced by Latinx immigrant communities from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. As someone who holds dual identities (Salvadoran-American and Hispanic), he works to represent both sides while maintaining a sense of pride in his heritage.

The district I am a part of consists mostly of residents with backgrounds similar to mine – predominantly Mexican American or other Latinx backgrounds. The diversity within these ethnicities is further represented through an array of different languages spoken throughout the district such as Spanish, Nahuatl, Mixteco Bajo & Zapoteco among others. This multifaceted composition helps to create not only a vibrant community but also offers insight into how cultures are blended together when immigrating to new countries like the United States. It’s important for our representatives to be aware of this history to better serve their constituents.

Having leaders that reflect both their constituent population’s demographic makeup as well as its shared beliefs enables them to better understand what issues need attention within their districts (Reyes et al., 2019). Through greater representation across government institutions it allows people from all walks of life equal access to opportunities they may have otherwise been denied due solely on their cultural background (Reingold & Mokhtari 2020). Reflective democracy therefore seeks to break down barriers faced by minority groups while empowering communities through meaningful representation in all levels of government decision making processes so that everyone can equally benefit from them regardless if we are born here or abroad.
