For the past year, I have volunteered at my local community food bank, primarily assisting with food sorting and distribution. While this may not be a formal leadership role, it has provided valuable lessons in teamwork, empathy, and the importance of social capital. Let’s explore this experience using the DEAL model:
Describe (D):
Each week, I would spend a few hours at the food bank alongside a diverse group of volunteers. We collaborated to sort donated food items, ensuring they were within expiration dates and properly categorized. During distribution days, we interacted with community members facing food insecurity, providing them with essential groceries.

Personal: Volunteering fostered a sense of purpose and connectedness to my community. Witnessing the struggles of others and being part of the solution brought a sense of fulfillment.
