Gender development is a complex phenomenon, and the influence of sexual differentiation on it is an area of continued research. Sexual differentiation refers to the biological processes by which male and female physical characteristics are determined (Lippa et al., 2021). These processes include genetic factors such as chromosomal sex, hormonal influences from sex-specific hormones such as testosterone and estrogen, and anatomical differences like those related to reproductive organs.
Sexual differentiation has a major impact on gender development due to its influence on both brain structure and function. Research suggests that exposure to prenatal testosterone may affect cognitive abilities in males differently than females (Giedd & Blosser 2018). In addition, differences between male and female brains in terms of gray matter volume have been documented (Kirkcaldy et al., 2020).
