Shakespeare’s work is still significantly relevant today because: the characters are relatable; works from a long time ago can still be relevant; and talking about the plays can possibly build friendships. Not only did Shakespeare teach us about ourselves and humanity, but also invented around 1700 words which we still use in everyday English today. For those with an interest in learning the English language more than reading its literature, Shakespeare is still important. This is because of his contributions to the development of words and phrases that are now used in daily basis. He came up with new words, 422 of them, in fact, including bump, lonely and upstairs. Shakespeare’s plays are studied in schools across countries. The most famous include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Macbeth. Shakespeare captures fundamental concepts about the way our minds work that have since been demonstrated by psychologists and outlined in two popular books: Daniel Kahneman Thinking Fast and Slow [2011], and Jonathan Haidt’s The Righteous Mind [2012].
