Social movement, a loosely organized but sustained campaign in support of a social goal, typically either the implementation or the prevention of a change in society`s structure or values. Notable examples include the American civil rights movements, second-wave feminism, gay rights movement, opposition to mass surveillance, etc. The second wave feminism movement took place in the 1960s and 1970s and focused on issues of equality and discrimination. Starting initially in the United States with American women, the feminist liberation movement soon spread to other Western countries. Whereas first-wave feminism focused mainly on suffrage and overturning legal obstacles to gender equality, second-wave feminism broadened the debate to include a wider range of issues: sexuality, family, domesticity, the workplace, reproductive rights, and de facto inequalities, among others.
