The history of nursing shows that spirituality has been well-documented. Currently, in addition to the fundamental practice of offering spiritual care in nursing, there are standards mandated by the Joint Commission, the American Nurses Association, and other organizations.

My personal spiritual philosophy is that everyone has a unique spiritual journey, and that it is important to respect and honor that journey. I believe that spirituality is about finding meaning and purpose in life, and that it can be a source of strength and comfort during difficult times.

I apply my spiritual philosophy to my nursing practice by creating a safe and supportive environment for my patients to explore their spirituality. I listen to their stories and I respect their beliefs, even if they are different from my own. Here are two instances of how I have rendered spiritual care:

  • I also had a patient who was a Muslim. He was feeling very isolated because he was the only Muslim patient on the unit. I helped him to find a prayer rug and I arranged for a Muslim chaplain to visit him. He told me that I had made him feel welcome and that he was grateful for my help.

In both of these cases, I felt relaxed and confident during my interventions. I knew that I was providing the best possible care for my patients, and I was glad that I could make a difference in their lives.

I believe that spiritual care is an essential part of nursing care. It can help patients to cope with difficult emotions, find meaning in their lives, and connect with their spiritual community. I am grateful for the opportunity to provide spiritual care to my patients, and I believe that it is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.
