Technological Determinism

Choose two of the historical resources (not the articles defining technological determinism & social constructivism) from the Required Learning Materials that interest you and then do the following:
Put full citations for both of the resources in MLA format at the top of your post.
For each resource, explain whether it takes the approach of social constructivism or technological determinism? Or is there a combination of both approaches? How do you know this? What specifics from each resource give you hints about its approach?
Determine which resource you think is most successful with its approach and explain why.

Two of the historical resources that interest me are the articles “The Medium is the Message” by Marshall McLuhan (1964) and “A Case for Social Constructivism in Media Studies” by Joli Jensen (1996).

McLuhan’s article proposes that it is not only what we say but also how we communicate that matters. He argues that communication technologies, such as radio or television, can shape our thoughts and values due to their inherent properties (Mcluhan, 1964). For instance, he claims that certain types of media can be used to transmit messages faster than others which may lead to people having less time to think reflect upon them thereby influencing how they interpret information. Furthermore, he suggests that as technology evolves so too do our cultural ideas and beliefs leading him to conclude that “the medium is the message” (Mcluhan, 1964).

Meanwhile Jensen\’s article explores social constructivism within media studies finding there is evidence suggesting this approach could help provide a more comprehensive understanding on how culture affects the ways in which individuals both consume and produce media. In particular she states there seem to be strong correlations between user-generated content – particularly those related with minority groups – and traditional press outlets as well as powerful relationships between these same users forming online communities where ideas are quickly disseminated amongst peers allowing for progressive discourse around certain topics (Jensen 1996). The implications of these findings imply a need for greater recognition about power structures present within society when assessing its relationship with different forms of media along with an appreciation for marginalized voices within a digital context who have often been excluded from traditional conversations.

Given the expected worth of such figures propelling scholastic achievement and hence impacting results like maintenance, wearing down, and graduation rates, research is justified as it might give understanding into non-mental techniques that could be of possible benefit to this populace (Lamm, 2000) . Staffing of emergency clinics, centers, and nursing homes is more basic than any time in recent memory as the enormous quantities of ‘people born after WW2’s start to understand the requirement for more continuous clinical mediation and long haul care. Interest in turning into a medical caretaker has disappeared as of late, presumably because of the historical bac
