Testosterone Hormone

Testosterone is a sex hormone that plays important roles in the body. It is found in humans, as well as in other animals. In male humans, testosterone plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as testes and prostate, as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as increased muscle and bone mass, and the growth of body hair. Testosterone is produced by the gonads (by the Leydig cells in testes in men and by the ovaries in women), although small quantities are also produced by the adrenal glands in both sexes. Testosterone is an androgen, meaning that it stimulates the development of male characteristics. Testosterone receptors are present on the Sertoli and peritubular cells, some Leydig cells, and endothelial cells of the small arterioles. When levels of testosterone drop below levels that are healthy, they can lead to conditions like hypogonadism or infertility.
