Q16
Merton identified five forms of adaptation; describe each one. For each of these, identify the culturally defined goals/ends and structurally defined means Provide an example scenario using each of the five adaptations, goals/ends, and means.
Merton's Five Modes of Adaptation: An Exploration
Robert K. Merton's theory of anomie explores the strain individuals experience when there's a disconnect between culturally defined goals (success, wealth) and the legitimate means (education, hard work) to achieve them. This strain can lead to various adaptations, which Merton categorized into five types:
- Conformity (Goal: Success, Means: Socially Approved)
- Description: Individuals accept both the societal goals and the legitimate means to achieve them. They work hard within the system to achieve success.
- Example: A student studies diligently and obtains good grades to get into a prestigious university.
- Innovation (Goal: Success, Means: Unconventional)
- Description: Individuals accept the societal goals of success but find the legitimate means unattainable. They may resort to unconventional or even illegal methods to achieve their goals.
- Example: A struggling artist starts selling forgeries of famous paintings to gain recognition and financial success.
- Ritualism (Goal: Maintain status quo, Means: Strict adherence to rules)
- Description: Individuals abandon the goal of achieving great success but cling rigidly to the established means. They may prioritize following rules and procedures over achieving results.
- Example: A government bureaucrat meticulously completes paperwork, delaying important projects while adhering to every regulation.
- Retreatism (Goal & Means: Reject both)
- Description: Individuals abandon both the societal goals and the legitimate means to achieve them. They may withdraw from society, resorting to substance abuse or social isolation.
- Example: A young person disillusioned with the pressure to succeed drops out of school and disconnects from social life.
- Rebellion (Goal: Change the system, Means: Create new system)
- Description: Individuals reject both the societal goals and the means to achieve them. They actively seek to change the system altogether, advocating for new goals and means.
- Example: A social justice activist protests economic inequality and advocates for a more equitable distribution of wealth and opportunities.
