Trent is a 21-year old college student struggling with mental health issues. He has been diagnosed with depression and anxiety, which have caused him to feel overwhelmed and unable to cope with day-to-day tasks. Although Trent has been receiving treatment from his family doctor, he continues to struggle with managing his mental health. As such, there is a need for additional interventions that address the root causes of his distress and help him learn effective coping strategies.
Review of Literature
A review of the literature reveals numerous evidence-based approaches for addressing mental health problems in young adults like Trent. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an established psychological approach that focuses on helping people identify negative thought patterns and develop more constructive ways of thinking about difficult situations (Beck et al., 1979). Another helpful intervention is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which combines CBT techniques with mindfulness practices to help individuals learn how to regulate their emotions and attend to their present moment experiences (Linehan, 1993). Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is another strategy that uses mindfulness meditation techniques as well as body awareness activities such as yoga or tai chi to reduce stress levels while encouraging self-compassion(Kabat Zin et al., 1992). Finally, Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) provides a comprehensive approach for developing psychological flexibility by teaching clients how to accept difficult thoughts and feelings without getting stuck in them(Hayes et al., 2012).

The primary focus of any intervention must be helping Trent become aware of his thought patterns and feelings so that he can work towards developing healthier habits.
