Hegel famously claimed that “art has ended”, meaning that traditional forms of art such as painting and sculpture have lost their ability to represent the spiritual and intellectual development of humanity (Lambert, 2018). According to Hegel, these arts had largely served their purpose in helping people understand themselves better by providing insight into human nature. However, he argued that with the advent of science and philosophy during the Enlightenment period, these forms of expression were no longer needed to understand reality.

Despite this claim, art still remains an important part of our culture today even if its function has shifted away from being a representation of human consciousness. Nowadays art can take on many different forms such as performance art or digital media which allow people to explore ideas in more creative ways than ever before (Kuo & Lee, 2020). Additionally, artists are now able to use technology like VR and AR to create immersive experiences for viewers which can be used to express complex concepts in ways that could not be achieved through traditional methods (Rebecchi-Scrive et al., 2019). Finally, modern artists are increasingly engaging with social issues such as racism or climate change through their work which is inspiring conversations about these topics within society at large (Gardner et al., 2017).

Overall, it is clear that despite Hegel’s claims about the end of art, it is still alive and well today. Art continues to evolve with each new generation so it can remain relevant in order for us to explore our world and make sense of it.
