The pandemic and business for USA firms
The change in the behavior of passengers following the covid-19 crisis, travel restrictions and ensuing economic crisis have resulted in a dramatic drop in demand for airline services. According to the International Air Transport Association [I.A.T.A], the collapse in economic activity and trade affected freight, which was almost 30% lower year-on-year in April and still about 12% lower in August. Operating costs are likely to increase in the short-run for both airlines and airports because of additional health and safety requirements before they can be passed on to consumers. Airlines during this crisis are flying cargo on empty passenger aircraft by fastening boxes to seats with nets or stripping the passenger cabins. These cargo operations are helping to buffer declining passenger revenue for cash-strapped airlines. Carriers will decide how fast to add 737NGs and other newer aircraft to their cargo fleets based on the costs of conversion, availability, maintenance, and fuel efficiency.
