The DSM-5-TR and Differential Diagnosis
Review a specific addiction listed in the DSM-5-TR and address what the relevant
differential diagnosis would need to rule out. Note what assessments are needed to rule
out other mental health or medical disorders (with similar concerns or symptoms) that
might be present. What assessments would help support determining the level of
severity?
Specific Addiction
I will review the addiction to alcohol, which is listed in the DSM-5-TR as Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). AUD is characterized by a pattern of drinking that leads to significant problems in one's life, such as problems with work, relationships, or health.
Differential Diagnosis
The differential diagnosis for AUD would need to rule out other mental health or medical disorders that could be causing the symptoms of alcohol abuse. These disorders include:
- Substance Use Disorder (SUD): This is a general term for any disorder that is caused by the misuse of a substance, including alcohol.
- Anxiety Disorders: Anxiety disorders can sometimes cause symptoms that are similar to those of alcohol abuse, such as restlessness, irritability, and trouble sleeping.
- Depression: Depression can also cause symptoms that are similar to those of alcohol abuse, such as fatigue, loss of interest in activities, and thoughts of suicide.
- Medical Conditions: Some medical conditions, such as liver disease or diabetes, can cause symptoms that are similar to those of alcohol abuse.
- Physical Exam: This would help to rule out any medical conditions that could be causing the symptoms.
- Blood Tests: These tests could be used to check for liver damage or other medical conditions.
- Mental Status Exam: This would assess the person's mental state and look for signs of other mental health disorders.
- Questionnaire: The person could be asked to complete a questionnaire about their alcohol use and any other symptoms they are experiencing.
- Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT): This is a self-report questionnaire that is used to assess alcohol use and identify people who may have AUD.
- CAGE Questionnaire: This is a brief screening tool that is used to assess for alcohol abuse.
- DSM-5 Criteria for AUD: These criteria are used to diagnose AUD.
