The relationship between a family’s definition of health and the community’s definition of health is interdependent. In my own family that resides in a rural town in central New York state, we believe that physical, mental, and spiritual health are all interconnected components to overall well being (García-Romero et al., 2017). We focus on preventative medicine as part of our personal healthcare plans; we also acknowledge the importance of social connections with others within our community.
Our concept of health promotion involves focusing on preventive care measures such as exercising regularly, eating nutritious meals and limiting processed foods, getting adequate sleep each night, and maintaining strong social relationships (Bourne et al., 2019). These behaviors not only benefit us individually but can have an accumulative effect on the broader community by helping to reduce chronic diseases and improve life expectancy (Kowalenko & Panzarella 2004). As members of this rural town community we ensure that everyone has access to basic necessities like food banks or housing assistance when needed.
We actively volunteer within our local schools and churches to provide mentoring programs for younger generations so they develop healthy habits early in life. We also support initiatives regarding environmental issues or infrastructure improvements which allow people living within our town the ability to learn about different ways they can protect their environment from pollutants or lead more active lifestyles through improved public transportation routes (Stoll-Kleemann & Pross 2016). Our involvement in these activities helps create awareness throughout our local area concerning how collective action can impact overall perceptions about what constitutes good health for everyone living here.
In conclusion, through understanding how much one person’s actions affect another’s well being we strive for both individual and communal wellness by taking an active role in advocating for better healthcare practices. By promoting preventive care measures such as exercise, proper nutrition and stress management along with supporting environmental sustainability initiatives while providing resources to those less fortunate help build healthier communities at large (Hernández-Ávila 2015).
