Sample Solution

Organizations typically have four types of teams: functional, self-managed, virtual, and cross-functional. The type of team I am currently on is a self-managed team as we manage ourselves without the need for external direction or steering from management (Fournies & Slevin, 2017). There are both pros and cons to this structure. One benefit is that because everyone takes responsibility for their own actions and decisions there can be an increased sense of accountability within the group which helps us stay focused on our objectives (Fournies & Slevin, 2017). Additionally, since members possess specialized skills they are often able to make more independent decisions without having to rely heavily on input from outside sources which in turn enhances overall decision making speed and efficiency (Fournies & Slevin, 2017).

On the other hand though, one disadvantage is that if any single member fails to perform their duties it could lead to serious problems as no one else will step in until they realize what has happened thus delaying corrective action if necessary (Fournies & Slevin, 2017). In addition, due to each individual’s specialization there may be less opportunity for knowledge sharing throughout the team which could hinder growth potential over time compared with other structures such as cross-functional teams that promote collaboration and learning among its members (Fournies&Slevin2017).

To conclude then, while self-managed teams have many advantages—such as increased accountability among its members—there can still be drawbacks such as low information flow between members or slow response times when issues arise. Therefore, managers should carefully consider all factors before deciding whether this type of structure would suit their organizational needs best.
