There are likely a variety of factors that can explain why some individuals choose to invite their friends and family members whereas others do not. My theory is that it may be due to a lack of enthusiasm and engagement from the attendees themselves. It could be possible that those individuals who are not inviting their friends and family might be feeling disconnected or apathetic about the event, which would prevent them from wanting to share it with others. Additionally, poor communication of expectations for the event could also be a factor in this situation. If church members don’t feel adequately informed as to what purpose the potluck serves, they may struggle to come up with reasoning as to why they should invite other people- ultimately leading them to refrain from doing so. Finally, social anxiety could play a role in this issue as well. Some people may feel uncomfortable extending an invitation because they fear being rejected or judged by those they invite (Liu & Wang, 2018).

Understanding these potential reasons behind why certain church members aren’t inviting their peers outside of the church walls is essential if Pastor Oswald wants his invitation strategy for the potluck events to be successful. Identifying potential barriers preventing guests from attending will allow him and other leaders within the church community figure out how best approach each unique individual with tailored solutions specifically targeting their needs rather than making assumptions on why no one is coming through blanket messages sent out via email or on posters at Sunday service (Heller et al., 2017). Taking this more personal route when trying to reach out beyond narrow social circles has proven effective in many outreach efforts geared towards religious services such as these (Sandeep & Pantoja, 2019).
